讲座介绍:
Chinese herbs and medicine are commonly used in TCM to cure illness. In most cases, they also have been used in our daily life, knowingly or unknowingly, as a form of healthcare to strengthen our health or alleviate our uncomfortable symptoms encounter in our body such as excessive phlegm, heatiness, cough etc. In many cases, some of the herbs and medicine that you have tried may be effective on one occasion but on another occasion, they are either ineffective or could worsen your symptoms. During the course, besides learning the properties of the herbs and medicinal decoctions, you will also have the opportunity to taste some of the prepared herbs and medicine. You will have the opportunity to examine how simple formulas are built up using individual herbs. The herbs and medicine to be introduced during the course will be those that you can easily get them off the shelf. This is the second part of “Commonly Used Chinese Herbs and Medicine”. There are 3 broad areas to be covered in this second part of “Commonly Used Chinese Herbs and Medicine” course – the first area is about the study of general theories of combining herbs to form formulas; the second area is a continuation to the first part of this course to the study of specific herbs and their specific uses that were not covered in the first part of this course; the third area is the study of specific formulas and their specific uses in relation to common body constitution. The first area starts with an introduction to some common models of human physiological systems based on TCM concepts with an introduction to common body constitution. Herbs characterization that was covered in the first part of this course will be recapitulated. Then principles of formulation will be introduced. Finally, principles in relation to preparation and administration of formulas will be covered. The second area includes a quick recap on tonics and heat-clearing herbs that was covered in the first part of this course. Then specific study of herbs that are used to perform functions such as dampness-draining, qi-regulating, blood-activating & stasis-resolving and phlegm-resolving will be examined. The third area is a specific study on some formulas that are used to perform heat-clearing, tonifying, qi-regulating, blood-regulating, dampness-eliminating and phlegm-expelling that can be useful to certain body constitution. Note: Attending the Part 1 of this course is highly recommended as many concepts on herbs usage covered in Part 1 will be assumed. However, the lecturer will still recap some of the essential topics covered in Part 1.
