Advanced Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Chinese) 7 years Part Time
Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to nurture students to become TCM professionals who are equipped with medical ethics and skills. This course includes TCM theoretical and clinical modules. Upon completion of this course, graduates will be awarded with Advanced Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine conferred by Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. They can also apply for the Singapore TCM-Physicians Registration Examination (STRE) organised by the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board (TCMPB). Candidates who pass the examination will then be eligible as registered TCM practitioners.
Prerequisite of the course
- Singapore Cambridge GCE “A” Level (At least two passes in subjects at H2 level and two passes in subjects at H1 level) or equivalent or higher
- Language requirement: Singapore Cambridge “O” level Chinese subject pass or equivalent or higher.
Qualification Certificate:
Upon successful completion of the required credits: passes in all required theoretical subjects, clinical practice and the graduation exam, and verification by exam board and the review of the graduation exam, graduates will be awarded the following certificate:

Foundation subject. Based on the basic theories of TCM, this subject looks into the basic theories, knowledge and skills of investigating conditions, determining diseases and differentiating syndromes. A bridging subject from the basic theories to the clinical subjects, it is one of the core subjects of this course. The aims of this subject are: to familiarise students with the meaning and contents of TCM diagnostics, the concepts and relationships between symptom, disease and syndrome etc, and the principles of TCM diagnostics; to grasp the basic skills and knowledge of inspections, auscultation, olfaction and pulse taking, and basic contents and unified syndrome differentiation systems of 8 principles, disease character and viscera etc; to familiarise students with the handling and integration of case information, thought processes in disease diagnosis, main symptom diagnosis and syndrome differentiation, and the contents, format and requirements of writing medical records. |

Foundation subject. This subject investigates and explains the theories and clinical uses of therapeutic principles and herbal formulae. Students are taught to grasp the components, application, usage, indications, combination significances and modifications of 150 basic, representative and commonly used herbal formulae. They are also given guidance in grasping the principles of herbal formulation, and basic patterns and skills of combining herbs, so as to nurture students to have the ability in analysing and using prepared formulae and in putting together their own formulae. The Emperor’s Canon of Medicine is one of China’s oldest existing medical science classics. It is thus a compulsory reading for learning TCM. The aims of this subject is: to allow students to have an even more systematic grasp of the basic theories and knowledge of TCM through the learning of the original classic; to familiarise students with the characteristics and ways of thinking of the classic’s theoretical systems and philosophies; to help students understand how the classic is studied so as to nurture the students’ ability to study ancient literature and set a firm foundation for future clinical practice and research in TCM. |

This subject studies the TCM classical literature “Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases” and the academic achievements due to research and development of the classic done by historical physicians. The main research content involves the basic patterns behind the “syndrome differentiation of the six channels” system’s integrated use of its nature, extrapolation, reasoning, treatment principles and herbal formulas. Its ultimate goal is to improve the standards of syndrome differentiation and clinical efficacy. Being a core subject in TCM, this subject encompasses both the theories of TCM and the characteristics of clinical medicine; it is an important foundation for the learning and study of clinical subjects, and is also a bridging subject between the foundational and clinical subjects. The Synopsis of Golden Chamber is China’s oldest existing treatise on miscellaneous diseases. Through this subject, students learn to grasp the basic theories, concepts and skills of the classic; grasp the laws of syndrome differentiation of miscellaneous diseases; open their minds with regards to clinical thinking; and improve their analytical and management abilities in difficult, rare diseases and syndromes, and ability to read ancient literature, so as to set a good foundation for improving their abilities and standards of diagnosing and treating diseases in the various clinical departments. |

Seasonal Febrile Diseases is an important clinical foundation subject. It investigates the incidence, development patterns, diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods of seasonal febrile diseases, and is strongly applicable to the clinical setting. Simultaneously, the theories and treatment and diagnosis methods hold great significance in TCM and for febrile diseases and syndromes encountered in the various clinical departments. Through the learning of this subject, students are taught to grasp “Wei Qi Ying Xue syndrome differentiation” and “three-jiao syndrome differentiation” that lie at the heart of the seasonal febrile disease theoretical system, and clinical skills necessary for common febrile diseases. Normal Human Anatomy investigates the form and structure of the normal human body and is an important medical foundation subject.
Apart from describing the human body structure from the TCM perspective, this subject also introduces the skeletal, muscular and surface landmarks during the topic of the musculoskeletal system. This is to lay the necessary foundation for future acupuncture, moxibustion and Tuina subjects etc. The subject also emphasizes on the surface projections of important organs during the topic of the internal organ systems, so as to lay the foundation for subjects such as TCM Internal Medicine etc; emphasizes on surface projections of the great vessels and important nerves, and places importance on the pulse points and pressure points for bleeding during the topic of the circulatory and nervous systems. These will provide great advantage for future clinical subjects. Additionally, several anatomical cross-sections of “dangerous acupoints” have been included. This part is a new side topic that integrates anatomy and TCM acupoints; it enables students to understand why certain acupoints are dangerous to use while studying anatomical structures.

Western Internal Medicines is an important clinical subject in clinical medicine. Through the learning of this subject and on top of the foundation of having a complete grasp of the theories and skills of TCM, students are taught to systematically grasp the basic theories, knowledge and skills of internal medicine, grasp the diagnoses, preventions and treatments of common diseases, and be familiarised with the principles and methods of critical conditions in internal medicine.
